The Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), also known as the "Superfund law," requires a review of cleanup actions at Superfund sites be conducted at least once every five years. The purpose of a five-year review is to ensure that the cleanup solutions (remedies) chosen for a site are functioning properly and continue to protect human health and the environment.

The Navy will conduct the Fifth Five-Year Review at the Former Adak Naval Complex with the support of ADEC and EPA. This review is required because
contaminants have been left at Adak above levels that do not allow for unlimited use and unrestricted exposure.
